Ingrowing Toenails

Why should I consider nail surgery for my ingrown toenail?

You should consider nail surgery if the nail is becoming infected regularly or if it is constantly painful and needs regular Podiatry treatment to relieve discomfort.

Nail Surgery Procedure

A local anaesthetic is injected at the base of the toe to number the toe so that the procedure is painless. If you have ever had an allergic reaction or adverse reaction to an anaesthetic before it is extremely important to mention this.

Once the area is numb the troublesome section of nail is removed. To prevent the nail from growing again a chemical is applied to the nail to destroy the nail producing cells.

The toe is then dressed with an antiseptic dressing.

After Nail Surgery

You need to go home and sit with your foot up for the rest of the day.
The folowing day you will be back to normal activities. On this day you will return to the clinic to have the original dressing removed and a new one applied.
Following this you will be dressing the toe everyday yourself until the would heals. You will be given full instructions on how to do this at the next day's appointment.
Normal healing time is between 4 - 6 weeks.
